In response to the escalating kidnapping crisis in Abuja, The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, revealed the approval of President Tinubu for the emergency procurement of advanced digital tracking tools.
Wike revealed this critical development during a media briefing held in Abuja on Monday.
Highlighting the current security gaps, Wike emphasized that essential facilities to track criminals were severely lacking in the FCT, with the limited availability restricted to the Police Headquarters and the Office of the National Security Adviser.
He expressed concern over the absence of proper equipment, stating that security agencies often had to rely on centralized locations during emergencies.
Wike addressed the deficiencies in security infrastructure, stating, “So many facilities were not provided. Vehicles for the security agencies are not there.
You cannot believe that equipment to track criminals is not there. When anything happens, they return to the Office of the National Security Adviser or the Force Headquarters. That is not the way it is supposed to be.”
He further revealed plans to address logistical challenges by procuring motorcycles for areas inaccessible by conventional vehicles. Wike stressed that security encompasses both equipment and personnel motivation, refraining from discussing specific strategies due to the sensitivity of the ongoing security discussions.
This announcement follows a surge in insecurity within the nation’s capital, prompting the Senate to summon Wike to address the alarming situation. Recent efforts by security agencies have resulted in the successful rescue of abducted Abuja residents.
