Wike Condemns Impunity, Says Impeachment Of Fubara Is Constitutional

Wike Condemns Impunity, Says Impeachment Of Fubara Is Constitutional.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticised the actions of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, describing them as a demonstration of impunity and disregard for the rule of law. Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday, Wike asserted that impeachment is not a criminal offence and can be carried out if justified.

“Politics is not play. If he has done something to be impeached, let them impeach him. It’s not a criminal offence,” Wike stated, stressing that loyalty should be mutual in governance. He further emphasised that impeachment is a constitutional process and should not be seen as an unlawful act.

Addressing concerns that Fubara’s impeachment could lead to unrest in the Niger Delta, Wike dismissed such threats as baseless political manoeuvres. “Rubbish! Tell me, who are the militants? Who is not a militant? Who is born as a militant?” he questioned, arguing that no group should claim exclusive power to disrupt national security.

Wike also criticised Fubara’s approach to governance, particularly his handling of relations with the State House of Assembly. He suggested that the governor has failed to prioritise harmony with lawmakers, which has led to the ongoing political crisis.

“You can take a horse to water, but you can’t force the horse to drink,” Wike remarked when asked about his role in the matter. He further questioned whether Fubara had ever sought his advice or attempted to mend relationships with key political figures.

The minister also accused Fubara’s associates of misleading him for their personal gain. Additionally, he criticised the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), calling it the “worst organisation” for allegedly attempting to obstruct President Bola Tinubu’s peace efforts in Rivers State.

Wike’s remarks highlight the deepening political tension in Rivers State, as stakeholders continue to navigate the challenges of governance and power dynamics in the region.
