World Cup 2026 Play Offs Mikel Applauds Osimhen For Inspiring Super Eagles Comeback

Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has praised Victor Osimhen for his outstanding performance in Nigeria’s recent World Cup qualification campaign, describing the striker as the key force behind the team’s resurgence.

Mikel said the Napoli forward displayed exceptional leadership and quality at a crucial moment when the country needed hope in the qualifiers.

Osimhen scored a hat trick in Nigeria’s decisive 4 0 victory over Benin Republic which sealed the Super Eagles’ place in the CAF World Cup Play Offs. Mikel said the win revived the nation’s belief in qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and credited Osimhen for stepping up when it mattered most. He said on his podcast, “Our World Cup dream is still alive. Those two games were must win games and we did that.”

Mikel noted that despite criticism surrounding the team and football administration, Osimhen delivered under pressure and proved to be the standout player of the qualification round. He added, “People can say he scored a hat trick against Benin, but you still have to score it, you still have to show up. It was our biggest game of the season and if we didn’t win, we wouldn’t be talking about the World Cup. Victor Osimhen has single handedly kept us alive.”

The former Chelsea star further highlighted Osimhen’s passion, intensity and fighting spirit, saying his performance embodied what is expected from a top player in decisive moments. Mikel said, “When the pressure is on, the big boys step up and that’s exactly what he has done. He is the big boy in that team right now and we all needed him.”

Mikel also praised the overall team effort but stressed that Osimhen’s influence made the crucial difference that turned Nigeria’s hopes around. He encouraged the Super Eagles to maintain the momentum as they prepare for the upcoming Play Off matches that will determine their qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Meanwhile, fellow Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu also acknowledged Osimhen’s impressive form, reportedly stating that the forward is “a better striker” following their recent meeting in a Turkish Super League match. This has further reinforced Osimhen’s growing reputation as one of Africa’s top football stars.
