The global Christian community is in mourning with the passing of Ron Kenoly, the iconic American gospel singer, worship leader, songwriter, and pastor, who died on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at the age of 81.

The announcement came through a heartfelt statement on Kenoly’s official Instagram account by his longtime music director and close associate, Bruno Miranda, who confirmed that Kenoly passed away on the morning of February 3. No specific cause of death has been publicly disclosed by his family or representatives.

A Pioneer of Contemporary Worship Music

Born on December 6, 1944, in Coffeyville, Kansas, USA, Ron Kenoly’s journey to becoming a worship music legend was rooted in both musical talent and spiritual devotion. After high school, he served in the United States Air Force from 1965 to 1968, performing with a band called The Mellow Fellows on military bases.

Following his military service, Kenoly moved to Los Angeles to pursue music ministry full-time. His big break came in the early 1990s when his live worship albums began drawing global attention. His 1992 album Lift Him Up became one of the fastest-selling worship albums of its era, helping to redefine praise music in churches around the world.

Kenoly was known for his powerful voice, choir-driven arrangements, and songs that encouraged congregational worship — not mere performance — making him a defining figure in modern praise music.

Musical Legacy and Influence

Throughout his prolific career, Kenoly released more than 20 albums, many of which became staples in churches across continents. Some of his most beloved worship songs include:
  • Ancient of Days

  • Jesus Is Alive

  • Lift Him Up

  • Majesty

  • We Offer Praises

  • Sing Out With One Voice

  • God Is Able

His approach blended traditional gospel fervor with contemporary praise elements, encouraging active participation from worshippers and influencing generations of worship leaders.

Kenoly’s work earned recognition within the Christian music community, including multiple Dove Award nominations and a win for Praise & Worship Album of the Year for Welcome Home in 1997.

Life Beyond the Stage

Kenoly was more than a musician — he was a theologian and minister. He held a music degree, a Master of Divinity, and a Doctorate of Ministry in Sacred Music, reflecting his deep commitment to both musical excellence and theological depth.

He also served as a worship leader and pastor at Jubilee Christian Center in San Jose, California, where his leadership helped shape worship practices and mentor aspiring leaders.

Kenoly was married to his wife Tavita for over four decades, and together they raised their family while serving in ministry — a partnership that was often noted for its faithfulness and mutual support.

Global Tributes and Impact

News of Kenoly’s passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes from across the globe. Worship leaders, pastors, musicians, and church communities from Africa, the United States, Europe, and beyond have shared stories of how his music shaped their faith and worship.

In Nigeria, well-known gospel artists and church leaders publicly mourned the loss, describing Kenoly as a generational inspiration whose songs helped shape modern praise and worship services.

Bishop Wale Oke, President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), praised Kenoly as a “true worshipper” whose life and music carried the presence of God wherever he ministered.

A Legacy That Still Sings

Ron Kenoly’s passing marks the end of a remarkable era in gospel music, but his legacy continues. His rich catalog of worship anthems still echoes in churches, conferences, and Christian gatherings worldwide — a testament to a life devoted to lifting hearts in praise.

As the global community remembers his contributions, Kenoly’s message remains clear: worship is not mere performance, but a heartfelt response to the Divine
