Zamalek Triumphs in African Confederation Cup Final
Zamalek secured the African Confederation Cup title on away goals after a 1-0 victory over Renaissance Berkane in the second leg, thanks to Ahmed Hamdy’s first-half strike on Sunday.
The aggregate score ended 2-2 after the return leg in Cairo, with the Egyptian giants claiming the trophy by virtue of their crucial away goal in last Sunday’s 2-1 defeat in Morocco.
Hamdy scored the decisive goal in the 23rd minute, capitalizing on a defensive lapse by Berkane to sweep the ball home after a corner. Both teams had opportunities to score additional goals, but the match remained tightly contested.
The Moroccan side’s hopes were further dashed when defender Hamza El Moussaoui was sent off in added time, leaving them with ten men.
This victory marks Zamalek’s second success in the Confederation Cup. They previously triumphed over Berkane on penalties in the 2019 final after a 1-1 aggregate draw.
Egyptian football could witness further glory in the African club competitions on Saturday, as Zamalek’s domestic rivals Al Ahly host Tunisia’s Esperance in the Champions League final second leg. The first leg in Tunis ended in a goalless draw.
