Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that Russia is exploiting the world’s shifting focus away from the ongoing war in Ukraine, as international attention drifts toward other global crises.
He urged Kyiv’s allies to step up military support, particularly air defence systems, to counter intensified Russian attacks.
In a statement on Sunday, Zelensky said Moscow had increased strikes across several regions in recent weeks, taking advantage of what he called “a moment of reduced global attention.” He remarked, “Russia is now taking advantage of the fact that the Middle East and domestic issues in every country are getting maximum attention.”
The Ukrainian leader disclosed that he spoke with French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss strengthening Ukraine’s air defences. “We agreed to accelerate the delivery of systems that are among our priority needs,” Zelensky said, stressing that continued Western support remains critical to preventing further Russian advances.
Reports from Ukrainian officials indicate that Russian forces have stepped up attacks targeting power grids and energy infrastructure, threatening the country’s preparations for the winter months. Kyiv claims Moscow is deliberately seeking to weaken civilian resilience and energy supply through sustained bombardment.
Analysts say the decline in international media coverage of the war could embolden Russia to expand its operations. Several Western governments have faced domestic political pressures, leading to reduced funding and slower delivery of military assistance to Ukraine. Experts warn this could shift the balance of the conflict if not urgently addressed.
Despite these challenges, Zelensky expressed optimism about ongoing diplomatic efforts, saying he continues to engage with global partners to maintain unity against Russian aggression. “Our allies know that freedom’s defence in Ukraine is the defence of peace in Europe,” he said.
