His Excellency, Emmerson Mnangagwa, President of Zimbabwe, today met with Herbert Mensah, President of Rugby Africa (www.RugbyAfrique.com), at State House to discuss Zimbabwe’s preparations for the Rugby World Cup 2027, one of the world’s biggest sporting events.

Historic Return to the World Stage

After 34 years, the Zimbabwe Sables have qualified for the Rugby World Cup by winning the 2025 Rugby Africa Cup in Kampala. Zimbabwe becomes the only African team to qualify through regional competition, alongside automatic qualifier South Africa’s Springboks, reigning champions.

Government and Rugby Africa Unite

Organized by the Zimbabwe Rugby Union, the meeting highlighted the importance of collaboration between national governments, sports ministries, and continental rugby bodies. “When government, the union, and Rugby Africa unite behind a clear vision, the possibilities are enormous,” said Mensah.

A Nation Behind Its Team

“I was impressed by the government’s commitment to the Zimbabwe Sables and the future of rugby in Zimbabwe,” Mensah said. “The Sables have earned their place back on the world stage after 34 years, and every Zimbabwean should be proud. Our responsibility now is to build the structures, preparation, and unity around these players so they carry the pride of an entire nation to the Rugby World Cup.”

Investing in Africa’s Rugby Future

Mensah reaffirmed Rugby Africa’s support for Zimbabwe, emphasizing leadership development, enhanced preparation, and player dedication. The meeting also highlighted the broader role of governments in youth development, high-performance structures, and competitive pathways.

Expert Voices in Attendance

Joining the discussion were Steph Nel, World Rugby Senior High Performance Consultant for Africa, and David Gilbert, former President of Botswana Rugby, former Vice President of Rugby Africa, and current adviser to the Rugby Africa President.

Looking Ahead to Rugby World Cup 2027

The Rugby World Cup 2027, hosted in Australia, will feature the best teams from across the globe, including South Africa, the only nation to win four Rugby World Cups. Zimbabwe’s return underscores the rising strength and talent of African rugby on the international stage.
