Africa overflows with inspirational sayings with insights for everyday life.

We have compiled nine of those sayings to live by during tough times.

Every culture has wise sayings and proverbs usually summarised in short sentences. They are passed down from generations in different languages and cultures but their message is universal.

Read on for some of our favourite African proverbs which come in handy through life’s challenges.

”Teeth do not see poverty”

There’s always something to smile about even when circumstances are bad. It may not be apparent to you but people still manage to smile about one thing or another.

”Do not look where you feel, but where you slipped”

Don’t dwell on mistakes and how you feel about them. Rather, focus on what caused you to blunder. That way, it is less likely to happen again and you learn something beneficial.

“The best way to eat an elephant in your path is to cut him up into little pieces”

If you want to solve a problem, take it on bit by bit. Problems can overwhelm and paralyse action when they are tackled at once. Take small steps until you vanquish the problem.

“He who does not know one thing knows another”

It is impossible to know everything, but everyone knows something. Focus on what you know and master it. Rather than running around trying to know everything, focus on what you know and use it to get through challenges. Sometimes it’s a matter of perspective.

“Rain beats the leopard’s skin but it does not wash out the spots”

You cannot change anyone’s character no matter how hard you try. Don’t spend energy trying to change others. Similarly, once you get a bad name, it can be hard to change people’s opinions about you no matter how hard you try to make amends. Pour your energy in fruitful endeavours.

“No matter how hot your anger is it cannot cook yams”

Anger is a common emotion, and it can be a catalyst for positive actions. Anger directed at resolving issues is good. However, the act of getting angry is useless and takes a toll on you with negative effects to boot!

“A roaring lion kills no game”

Talking about things accomplishes nothing especially if those things require action. You should also avoid premature celebration and bragging. Work on your dreams and goals quietly and let their fruition speak for itself.

Do not call the forest that shelters you a jungle”

Don’t take out your anger or frustration on someone who helps you or supports you. Avoid disrespect and harling sharp words towards those who share your burdens and responsibilities. Find ways of soothing yourself to avoid making enemies out of friends and your community.

“Rain does not fall on one roof alone”

It might not help you to know that everyone experiences hardships at some point, but remember that they are not personal. Challenges come to everyone depending on their circumstances.
