The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has warned transport unions and affiliates against fixing ‘union stickers’ on private vehicles in place of valid registration numbers.
General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, issued the warning in a statement released on Sunday by Mr. Taofiq Adebayo, the agency’s Public Affairs Director.
LASTMA described the practice as a violation of regulatory frameworks, constituting both a serious security infraction and a gross subversion of lawful vehicular identification systems within the metropolis. According to Mr. Bakare-Oki, any vehicle discovered navigating the roadways under the guise of ‘Union Sticker’ identifiers or other unauthorized symbols shall be summarily impounded, and the culpable parties shall face full sanctions under the provisions of the law.
The agency emphasized that every vehicle in Lagos must be duly registered with constitutionally empowered agencies. Union stickers or any unauthorized insignia cannot replace legitimate number plates. LASTMA warned that the proliferation of such unauthorized identifiers imperils public safety, compromises effective law enforcement, and undermines the sanctity of statutory registration protocols.
LASTMA will collaborate with security formations and other relevant enforcement agencies to heighten surveillance across strategic corridors to ensure total compliance with extant laws. The agency urged transport union members to comply strictly with lawful registration obligations, stressing that adherence is not merely a matter of administrative orderliness but a paramount safeguard for the collective security and well-being of all Lagosians.
By enforcing this directive, LASTMA aims to sanitize the transport sector, protect lives, secure property, and uphold the integrity of traffic management across the state.
