A tragic boat accident in Sokoto State’s Sabon Birni Local Government Area has claimed the lives of 10 people.
The victims were fleeing from an impending attack by bandits in Zalla Bango, a remote village, when the incident occurred. The boat hit a collapsed culvert, broke, and sank, resulting in the deaths of all 10 passengers on board.
According to DSP Ahmed Rufai, spokesman of the Sokoto State Police Command, the corpses of the victims were recovered and buried in accordance with Islamic rites. The Chairman of Sabon Birni Local Government Area, Alhaji Ayuba Hashimu, confirmed the incident and stated that efforts were ongoing to determine the exact number of victims.
In a separate incident, the police reported that a 47-year-old village head, Murtala Sa’adu, and his neighbor, Ibrahim Maikudi, were killed in an attack by Lakurawa terrorists in Santana village, Tangaza Local Government Area.
Boat accidents have been a recurring issue in Sokoto, with recent incidents including the discovery of a 29-year-old’s body after a boat accident in Shagari Local Government Area and the deaths of six people in a boat capsize in Garin Faji, Sabon Birni.
