The coronation ceremony of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland has been marked with the unveiling of a rotating statue of the new monarch.

The life-size statue, dressed in an embroidered purple Yoruba traditional robe, was mounted on a round platform that rotates 360 degrees. The statue features layers of red neckbeads, a walking staff, and a horsetail, bearing a vivid resemblance to the new Olubadan.

Tens of thousands of well-wishers gathered for Oba Ladoja’s coronation, which marks a significant milestone in Ibadan’s history. The event drew traditional rulers, eminent personalities, politicians, scholars, and citizens of Ibadanland in celebration of the former governor’s ascension to the ancient throne. President Bola Tinubu, who attended the ceremony, was among the dignitaries who witnessed the formal installation of the new monarch at the historic Mapo Hall.

According to Professor Toyin Falola, a celebrated historian and African Studies scholar, Oba Ladoja’s ascension will usher in a new era of modernization for the historic city. “The city of Ibadan stands at a crossroads between preserving its deep-rooted traditions and embracing necessary reforms,” he said. “Oba Ladoja is well-suited to bridge that gap. With his experience as a former governor, senator, and successful entrepreneur, he has the vision and capacity to modernize Ibadan without eroding its cultural identity.”

The coronation ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, and Governor Seyi Makinde, who cut short his annual leave to attend the event. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also congratulated Oba Ladoja, urging him to “embrace humility, patience, and divine wisdom in his new role.”

Oba Ladoja’s journey to the throne is a remarkable one, from serving as governor of Oyo State to becoming a senator and successful entrepreneur. His experience and vision for Ibadan are expected to bring progress and unity to the ancient city. As Professor Falola noted, “Oba Ladoja has the vision and capacity to modernize Ibadan without eroding its cultural identity.”

The new Olubadan’s ascension marks a new chapter in Ibadan’s history, with expectations high that his reign will bring development and growth to the region. As the University of Ibadan’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, said, Oba Ladoja’s leadership is expected to attract innovation and development to the region.
