The Federal Government has declared October 1, 2025, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the government, congratulating all Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora on this historic occasion.

According to Dr. Tunji Ojo, “Nigerians should continue to uphold the patriotic spirit, unity, and resilience that have sustained the nation since independence in 1960.” He urged citizens to keep faith in President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on national rebirth, economic transformation, and collective prosperity.

As part of the celebrations, President Tinubu will deliver a national broadcast at 7:00 a.m. on October 1, highlighting his government’s reform agenda and reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey since independence in 1960. The traditional Independence anniversary parade will follow at 10:00 a.m. at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, with top government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and invited guests in attendance.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Nigeria @ 65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation”. The festivities will include an inter-denominational church service, a world press conference, and a national campus debate. The celebrations will conclude on Friday, October 3, with the unveiling of the National Values Charter and the grand finale of the National Campus Debate at the State House Conference Centre.

Dr. Tunji Ojo expressed confidence that with the cooperation of all Nigerians, the country will continue to grow stronger in peace, progress, and development. He wished Nigerians a happy and memorable 65th Independence Day celebration.

The declaration of October 1 as a public holiday is in line with the country’s tradition of marking its independence anniversary. Nigerians will have the opportunity to reflect on their nation’s progress and look forward to a brighter future.

As the country celebrates its 65th year of independence, Nigerians are encouraged to keep faith in the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and work together towards a greater nation.
