President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will officially inaugurate the newly renovated National Arts Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos, on October 1, 2025, as part of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary celebrations.

The ceremony will feature performances by the National Troupe and other leading artists, along with special remarks from Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka.

The renovated theatre, now known as the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts, boasts world-class facilities, including advanced stage engineering, cutting-edge audio-visual technology, refurbished interiors, solar power integration, and improved fire safety systems. According to CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso, “This is not just an edifice; it represents our history and culture. The transformation of this landmark into a world-class facility is a testament to the Nigerian spirit.”

The project was executed by the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Bankers’ Committee as part of their commitment to giving back to the nation. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu noted that the Wole Soyinka Centre will serve as a world-class venue for global conferences and performances, showcasing arts, tourism, and culture.

Minister Hannatu Musawa described the project as “a gift to the nation and a source of pride. The successful renovation of the National Theatre marks a milestone in our collective effort to preserve cultural assets while creating new opportunities for the creative industry.” The theatre’s reopening is expected to promote Nigeria’s cultural heritage and creative industries.

The inauguration ceremony will attract a distinguished gathering of state governors, members of the National Assembly, diplomats, industry leaders, academics, cultural ambassadors, and youth leaders. CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso will deliver the welcome address, with goodwill messages from Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Minister Hannatu Musawa.

The renovated National Theatre is a significant investment in Nigeria’s cultural heritage and creative future. With its transformation, the theatre now stands ready to host the next era of Nigeria’s cultural and creative renaissance.
