NURTW Chairman Sego Denies Incitement Allegations, Honours DSS Invitation

The Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Mustapha Sego, has confirmed that the Department of State Services (DSS) invited him over allegations of incitement ahead of the 2027 election.

Sego, however, denied threatening voters, saying his remark was misinterpreted.

Sego was accused of incitement after a viral video showed him addressing NURTW members, warning voters that what happened in 2023 wouldn’t be allowed to repeat itself in 2027. In response, Sego claimed his comments were directed at NURTW members and not meant to intimidate voters. “I have always been a man of peace, and my messages are directed only to our members. Everyone has the right to associate freely and choose their affiliations, and I fully respect that,” he said.

The NURTW chairman honored the DSS invitation and was released on bail. He believes the allegations are part of a plot to destabilize him and the NURTW in Lagos State. “There is always an enemy in every job, and we know where this is coming from. This is clearly an attempt to destabilize me and the NURTW in Lagos State,” Sego stated.

Sego also cautioned online bloggers to verify information before posting about him or the NURTW. “Spread the truth, remain fair, and report responsibly,” he urged. He reaffirmed his commitment to peace, unity, and the progress of the union, urging members and Lagosians to promote freedom of association, peace, truth, and unity in the state.

The incident highlights the recurring issue of voter intimidation and political violence in Lagos State, particularly by leaders linked to transport unions. In 2023, former Lagos State Parks Management Committee Chairman, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, threatened residents who refused to vote for the APC, warning them to stay at home.

Sego’s commitment to peace and unity is evident in his statement, “Together, let us promote freedom of association, peace, truth, and unity in Lagos State. Thank you, and may God bless us all.”
