A man named Bolaji Oluwasetire was arrested by the police in Ondo State, Nigeria, for allegedly sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl in Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area.
The suspect was caught in the act of forcing the minor into an indecent act around 9 p.m. after the victim’s father reported the crime.
According to the police spokesperson, Ayanlade Olayinka, the suspect ingested a poisonous substance, suspected to be herbicide, in an attempt to evade justice while in police custody. He was immediately rushed to the General Hospital in Ore, where he is receiving treatment under close monitoring.
The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the incident and assured that the suspect will face the full weight of the law upon recovery. “The minor victim is safe, and appropriate support services are being provided to her family. Investigation is ongoing, and the suspect will face the full weight of the law once he recovers,” Olayinka said.
The state Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, has condemned the act, warning that sexual predators will be hunted down and brought to justice. “Sexual predators will find no hiding place in Ondo State. We will hunt them down, expose them, and bring them to justice,” CP Lawal warned.
The victim’s family is receiving professional support to help her recover from the trauma. The police command has also urged parents and guardians to report any suspected cases of abuse, emphasizing the government’s zero-tolerance policy towards sexual and gender-based violence.
The suspect’s actions have sparked widespread outrage, and the police are working to ensure that justice is served. As the suspect receives treatment, the police will ensure that he faces the consequences of his actions upon recovery.
