The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suffered another major setback in Kaduna State as three of its House of Representatives members have officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmakers announced their defection during Tuesday’s plenary session, citing internal crises and lack of direction within the PDP as reasons for their decision.
Among the defectors is Hon. Amos Gwamna Magaji, who represents the Zango Kataf/Jaba Federal Constituency. He explained that persistent disagreements and poor leadership within the PDP pushed him and his colleagues to join the ruling party. “Our people deserve better representation and stability, which is why we have decided to align with the APC to deliver more meaningful development,” Magaji stated on the floor of the House.
The other two lawmakers, whose names were also listed in the defection notice read by the Speaker, declared their confidence in the leadership of the APC and pledged their full loyalty to the ruling party. Their defection further weakens the PDP’s presence in the National Assembly and strengthens the APC’s majority.
Following the announcement, the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, acknowledged the letters and officially welcomed the lawmakers to the APC caucus. He noted that the House remains committed to working for the collective progress of all Nigerians regardless of political affiliation.
Reactions from political observers suggest that the move may not be unconnected to the upcoming local government elections and internal restructuring within the PDP. Analysts believe the defections are part of a wider realignment ahead of 2027, as politicians position themselves for stronger platforms.
Meanwhile, the PDP leadership in Kaduna has condemned the action, describing it as a betrayal of the mandate given by the electorate. The party vowed to challenge the defections and urged its members to remain united despite the current challenges.
