The Ondo State government has moved to calm public fears following reports of a potential ISWAP (Islamic State West Africa Province) attack in the state.
The warning emerged after a security alert from the Department of State Services (DSS) identified some areas in Ondo as possible targets for terrorist activities.
In a statement, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, acknowledged the leaked DSS memo, which named Eriti Akoko and Oyin Akoko in Akoko North-West Local Government Area, as well as Owo town in Owo Local Government Area, as locations under surveillance by suspected terrorists. The memo also urged heightened vigilance from security agencies and residents.
Ajanaku stressed that such intelligence reports are routine and form part of ongoing security measures designed to detect and prevent potential threats. He reassured the public that the government and security agencies are taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of citizens.
Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has pledged full collaboration with security agencies to prevent any threat from materializing. He emphasized that the government is committed to maintaining peace and stability throughout the state, while ensuring that residents feel safe in their communities.
Residents are being urged to remain calm and continue with their daily activities while promptly reporting any suspicious movement or activity to the nearest security agency. The government’s proactive approach aims to prevent panic and ensure a coordinated response to any security challenge.
