Lagos is poised to host the 11th International Climate Change Summit in October 2025, welcoming over 1,200 delegates from 30 countries.
The summit, themed “Blue Economy, Green Money: Financing Africa’s Coastal Resilience and Ocean Innovation,” aims to position Lagos as Africa’s climate capital by addressing coastal vulnerabilities through sustainable initiatives.
The event will feature global CEOs, investors, scientists, and youth innovators, focusing on mobilizing resources for Africa’s climate resilience. Key areas of discussion include the blue economy, green finance, innovation, youth empowerment, and partnerships. International collaborators such as the International Finance Corporation (IFC), African Development Bank (AfDB), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are expected to participate.
Lagos State is investing heavily in coastal defenses, flood mitigation, renewable energy, and circular economy initiatives to transform its coastal challenges into opportunities for economic growth and environmental sustainability. The summit will serve as a strategic platform for governments, investors, scientists, and development partners to design practical, bankable climate solutions.
The summit is particularly significant as it precedes the COP30 global climate conference, providing Lagos an opportunity to shape the global conversation and translate local action into international impact. The event will also highlight the role of youth in driving climate innovation and the importance of partnerships in achieving long-term transformation.
Through this summit, Lagos is sending a clear message: Africa is not waiting to be rescued; we are ready to lead. The summit embodies the belief that vulnerability can be transformed into vision, and that Lagos’ coastal challenges can become a source of economic and ecological strength.
The Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources is actively engaging with local communities, including those in coastal areas affected by erosion, to ensure that the benefits of the summit reach all residents. The ministry is also collaborating with partners like Eko Atlantic and NIMASA to advance sustainable development and environmental protection in the region.
