JUST IN: Lagos Police Deny Attacking Residents During Demolition Exercise

The Lagos State Police Command has dismissed reports claiming that its officers attacked residents during a recent demolition exercise in the Oworonshoki area of Lagos State.

In a statement released by the command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Abimbola, the police described the allegations as false and misleading. According to him, the reports were “mischievously designed to misinform the public and tarnish the image of the command.”

The police explained that the demolition was carried out by the Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences and the Urban Development Department, both of which had earlier issued notices to residents before the exercise began. The statement added that the police were only present to maintain law and order and had no involvement in any acts of violence. “At no point did our officers attack or intimidate anyone. Their duty was simply to ensure peace during the operation,” the statement read.

The command further noted that its constitutional responsibility is to protect lives and property, including those of government officials performing lawful duties. It maintained that the demolition followed due process, with compensation reportedly paid to some affected occupants. The police assured the public that all their actions during the exercise were guided by professionalism and respect for human rights.

However, several residents have disputed the police’s position, claiming that the operation was forceful and chaotic. Some alleged that officers used tear gas and excessive force while people protested the demolition. One eyewitness said, “They came in large numbers with bulldozers and tear gas. Many residents lost their homes overnight without alternative shelter.” These conflicting accounts have fueled public tension in the affected community.

Lagos Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, appealed to residents to remain calm and verify information before spreading it. He urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and order in the state. Jimoh also reiterated that all police officers on duty during the demolition were instructed to conduct themselves “with civility and utmost respect for human dignity.”

The Lagos State Police Command concluded by urging the public to disregard the false reports, reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property while supporting lawful government policies that promote urban renewal and public safety.
