The Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, has reportedly been detained by military authorities over an alleged coup plot against the government.
According to early reports, the arrest took place in Abuja, though official confirmation from the Defence Headquarters is yet to be issued.
Sources said Ogbuku was taken into custody following intelligence reports suggesting that some top officials were under investigation for suspicious activities believed to threaten national security. While details remain unclear, insiders disclosed that the NDDC boss was allegedly linked to discussions viewed as subversive to the current administration.
Security operatives are said to have moved swiftly to prevent what they described as potential destabilisation efforts. “We received credible information and acted immediately to safeguard the state,” a senior security officer reportedly told DailyReport.ng. The officer, however, declined to give further details pending the outcome of preliminary investigations.
The development has sparked tension among staff and stakeholders in the Niger Delta region, with many calling for calm and due process. “We are still trying to understand what really happened. The MD has been working tirelessly for the commission and the region,” said one senior NDDC official who requested anonymity.
Meanwhile, political observers have urged caution, stressing that the allegations should not be politicised until verified by the authorities. “This is a sensitive matter that requires transparency and fairness,” noted a public affairs analyst in Port Harcourt.
As of press time, neither the Defence Headquarters nor the NDDC management has issued an official statement on the matter, while attempts to reach Dr. Ogbuku’s spokesperson proved unsuccessful. More details are expected as investigations continue.
