The Arewa Think Tank has criticised United States President Donald Trump for redesignating Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern CPC, describing the decision as unfair and not a true reflection of the nation’s religious environment.
The group said the move was unnecessary and did not align with the current realities of religious freedom in the country.
In a statement issued on Friday, the northern advocacy group said Nigeria has continued to promote peaceful coexistence and respect for different religious beliefs. It argued that Nigerians enjoy the freedom to worship and practice their faith, adding that the CPC label was misleading and capable of misrepresenting the nation before the international community. “Nigeria does not deserve such a classification because freedom of worship is respected here,” the group said.
The group accused Trump of acting on biased claims rather than verified facts, insisting that his decision was politically influenced. According to the statement, “This move is provocative and could create unnecessary tension. It is not based on an honest assessment of Nigeria’s religious landscape.” The group urged the United States to conduct a fair and independent review of the situation rather than rely on one sided reports.
The Arewa Think Tank urged President Bola Tinubu to respond through diplomatic channels to protect Nigeria’s image and defend its sovereignty. It stressed that the government must make its position known to ensure that the country is not unfairly judged or placed under undue pressure by foreign powers.
The group also warned that if left unchallenged, the CPC tag could weaken Nigeria’s foreign relations, affect international perception, and discourage foreign investments. It called on citizens to remain united and avoid allowing external comments to cause religious division or distrust among Nigerians.
It further appealed to global partners to assess Nigeria based on facts and current realities rather than outdated or politically motivated narratives. The group reaffirmed its commitment to engaging stakeholders on issues that affect the stability and advancement of the country.
