The Nigerian Railway Corporation has confirmed that vandalism was the likely cause of the recent derailment on the Warri–Itakpe train line, stressing that passenger safety was not compromised.
The incident, which occurred near Agbor in Delta State, involved two of the seven coaches of the train, and prompted an immediate suspension of services along the corridor.
NRC Managing Director Kayode Opeifa revealed that preliminary investigations point to track vandalism as the main factor behind the derailment. He stated, “Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident may have been caused by suspected track vandalism,” highlighting growing concerns over the security of railway infrastructure across the country.
Opeifa confirmed that all passengers aboard the train were safely evacuated to Agbor, with no casualties or injuries reported. He said, “We are pleased to confirm that all passengers on board were safely evacuated and fully accounted for. No casualties or injuries were recorded,” emphasizing the efficiency of the emergency response.
In response to the derailment, the NRC has suspended operations along the affected corridor to conduct a comprehensive safety and security audit. Recovery teams, supported by security personnel, are currently at the site and are working to restore the track. The NRC assured that operations would resume only after confirming that the line is safe for travel.
The MD also lamented the increasing trend of vandalism along the Warri–Itakpe route, describing such acts as economic sabotage that endanger both passengers and railway assets. He noted that theft of critical components such as rail clips, bolts, and cables has become a major threat to efficient train service in Nigeria.
NRC has pledged to collaborate with security agencies to safeguard its infrastructure and ensure the safe resumption of services. While no specific date has been announced for the reopening of the line, the Corporation assured the public that restoring reliable and safe train operations remains a top priority.
