The Lagos‑Calabar Coastal Highway has been temporarily opened by the Federal Ministry of Works and the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation to relieve severe traffic congestion in the Lekki area following a truck accident at Chisco.
According to Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the highway segment is accessible “pending when normal traffic flow is restored along the affected route.” The move is intended to provide immediate relief for motorists and commuters trapped in the congestion.
The accident reportedly blocked the main route through the Lekki Peninsula, forcing authorities to open an alternative route on the coastal highway. Osiyemi urged drivers to “exercise patience while plying the area” as clearing operations continue.
The temporarily opened section is part of the larger Lagos‑Calabar Coastal Highway project, which is set to run from Lagos to Calabar in Cross River State. It demonstrates the ongoing efforts by government authorities to manage urban traffic challenges.
Section 1 of the highway in Lagos, covering approximately 47.7 km from Ahmadu Bello Way to Eleko Village in Lekki, was inaugurated on May 31, 2025, though some portions remained incomplete at that time. The temporary opening now ensures smoother traffic flow in the affected area.
Authorities expect the temporary access to ease the congestion until the main route is cleared, providing much‑needed relief to commuters and facilitating safer travel along the busy Lekki corridor.
