The Lagos State Government has commenced a 24 hour traffic control operation across major roads in the state to tackle congestion and ensure smooth movement as the festive season approaches.

The initiative is designed to improve traffic flow and enhance public safety during the busy end of year period when vehicular movement usually increases.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation Sola Giwa said the operation will be jointly carried out by a multi agency task force. Agencies involved include the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority the Nigeria Police Force Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority Lagos Waste Management Authority and Kick Against Indiscipline. He stated that the collaboration will ensure that all traffic offenders are sanctioned while road obstructions are promptly removed.

General Manager of LASTMA Olalekan Bakare Oki noted that personnel have already been deployed on strategic routes such as Ikorodu Road Apapa Oshodi Expressway the Lekki Epe Corridor Agege Motor Road and other high traffic areas. He explained that the move was necessary to maintain order ahead of increased travel activities. “This operation will guarantee free flow of traffic and protect lives and property during the yuletide” he said.

As part of the enforcement exercise over 250 illegal shanties makeshift structures and abandoned vehicles were cleared from under bridges and road setbacks across the state particularly around Apapa Ijora and Costain. The state government described these sites as major contributors to road congestion and security threats. Officials said the clearance was also aimed at restoring sanity to public infrastructure.

Authorities disclosed that commercial bus operators who previously loaded illegally in those areas have now been relocated to designated parks and terminals. The state said the transformation of those spots is intended to improve orderliness and support the ongoing upgrade of public transportation infrastructure.

Residents and motorists were urged to cooperate with enforcement officers and comply with traffic regulations during the period. The Lagos State Government emphasised that the 24 hour traffic initiative will remain in effect throughout the festive season to ensure a safer and more organised motoring experience for Lagosians.
