The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expelled key figures including Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, and former party Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu.
The motion for expulsion was moved by Chief Olabode George, former PDP National Vice Chairman (South), and seconded by Hon. Samaila Burga, Chairman of PDP Bauchi State, at the ongoing party convention in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The expulsions come amid a factional dispute, with the Wike-led camp previously attempting to halt the convention through court action. The party, however, secured a favorable judgment from a high court in Oyo, allowing the convention to proceed.
In response, Mao Ohabunwa, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Wike faction, dismissed the convention as a “jamboree” and urged members to ignore it. Acting National Chairman of Wide-led faction, Abdulrahman Muhammad also called for delegates nationwide to stay away and focus on unifying the party.
Wike commended party members for defending PDP in their regions and vowed to uphold the rule of law while supporting loyalists within the party.
While internal discipline is necessary in any political organization, the manner in which it is enforced matters.
Expulsions of high-profile members risk further alienating loyalists and creating fractures that could be exploited by rival parties. PDP’s leadership must recognize that unity is not merely about control—it is about inclusivity, dialogue, and adherence to democratic principles within the party framework.
