CAF Awards Snub: Esther Okoronkwo Says ‘The Pitch Never Lies’

Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo has reacted to being left out of the final shortlist for the CAF Women’s Player of the Year Award, insisting that true recognition comes from performances on the field.

Okoronkwo, who was widely tipped by fans and analysts to make the top three, took to Instagram to express gratitude and subtle disappointment following the announcement.

In her post, Okoronkwo wrote, “I remain grateful for the support across Africa. CAF’s decision is noted, but my focus stays on the pitch, Recognition is earned not awarded. Awards don’t always reflect reality, but the pitch never lies.”

The forward’s omission from the shortlist has raised eyebrows among fans, particularly as she had standout performances over the last year. Zambian striker Barbara Banda was also notably absent from the list.

CAF released its three-person shortlist for the prestigious award, with Super Falcons star Rasheedat Ajibade making the cut. The list features players from the WAFCON final, including Rasheedat Ajibade (PSG/Nigeria), Ghizlane Chebbak (Al Hilal, Morocco), and Sanaa Mssoudy (AS FAR, Morocco).

Okoronkwo’s reaction suggests she is not dwelling on the snub and is instead focusing on her performances on the pitch. Her statement has sparked a wave of support from fans and fellow players, who are rallying behind her.

The CAF Women’s Player of the Year Award is one of the most prestigious individual honors in African football, and the outcome is eagerly anticipated. While Okoronkwo may not have made the shortlist, her performances on the pitch have undoubtedly earned her recognition and respect.
