A tragic accident occurred on Wednesday as an 18‑seater bus carrying prospective NYSC members from Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo State, crashed while en route to the orientation camp in Gombe State.
The crash has reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 16 passengers.
Eyewitnesses said the bus veered out of control along a northern highway before the crash. Authorities are yet to confirm the exact cause of the accident, but preliminary reports indicate a loss of control by the driver.
Of the 18 passengers on board, only two survived. Both survivors are receiving emergency medical care and are reported to be in critical condition.
Families, friends, and the university community have expressed shock and grief over the incident. Many of the victims were fresh graduates preparing to serve in the NYSC, heightening the tragedy.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched an investigation into the crash to determine the circumstances that led to the accident. So far, neither the NYSC nor the FRSC has released a full statement or identified the deceased.
This incident has sparked renewed concerns about road safety for corps members traveling long distances. Calls are increasing for stricter travel protocols and improved regulation of vehicles transporting NYSC members.
