The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has confirmed that a flight was grounded at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, following a nose gear failure that occurred on Thursday evening.
According to FAAN, the incident happened at about 19:10 hours, prompting an immediate response from airport emergency units to ensure the safety of everyone onboard.
FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr Henry Agbebire, stated that all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated from the aircraft without any casualties. He explained that apron buses were deployed to transport everyone from the aircraft to the terminal in a controlled and orderly manner.
In a statement issued after the incident, FAAN noted that its emergency response teams acted promptly and professionally to secure the aerodrome. The agency said fire tenders, medical personnel, and other essential safety units were mobilised in line with standard aviation emergency procedures. This ensured swift handling of the situation and minimized potential risks.
The statement further disclosed that the evacuation exercise was completed at about 19:48 hours, with all passengers accounted for and no injuries recorded. FAAN added that its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Services were on ground throughout the operation, maintaining safety while the aircraft and surrounding areas were secured.
FAAN emphasized that the safety of passengers, crew, and all airport users remained its top priority during and after the incident. The authority assured that every necessary precaution was taken to prevent hazards and ensure the stability of the aircraft following the technical fault.
The agency also promised to keep the public informed as more verified details become available. It reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high safety standards across all Nigerian airports while working closely with relevant aviation stakeholders to address such incidents promptly and effectively.
