The Nigerian Army has stated that it will take strict action against any personnel found responsible for the alleged withdrawal of soldiers from Maga community before the abduction of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State.
A source at the Army Headquarters confirmed that a full scale investigation is currently in progress to uncover what happened.
The abduction occurred on November 17 at Government Comprehensive Girls Secondary School Maga in Danko Wasagu Local Government Area. Following the incident, Governor Nasir Idris demanded clear explanations from military authorities regarding reports that troops had been removed from the school shortly before the attack.
According to the source, the investigation is focused on identifying who authorised the withdrawal and whether standard operational procedures were followed. He said the army leadership considers the development extremely serious and will not overlook any breach of duty.
The source stressed that anyone found negligent, regardless of rank, would face disciplinary and legal consequences. “The investigation is thorough and transparent. If any officer or soldier is found culpable in the unauthorised withdrawal or any act of negligence, appropriate actions will be taken,” he stated.
He also revealed that the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Waidi Shaibu, has restated the army’s commitment to professionalism and the protection of communities nationwide. He urged citizens to remain calm and allow the investigation to be completed, assuring that the findings would be made public to maintain accountability.
Meanwhile, troops are currently working with other security agencies and the Kebbi State Government to ensure the safe rescue of the abducted schoolgirls and to reinforce security in vulnerable communities across the state.
