Recall the “Jaye Lo” video of Davido’s new signee Olamilekan Taiwo aka Lagos Olori spurs mixed reaction by netizens. The contentious scene showcased men portraying praying mallams who were observed dancing in front of a mosque instead of praying.
This performance has caused offense among some Muslim devotees. Many Muslim devotees labelled the video offensive and called for a retraction while also threatening the artists with a lawsuit.
However, the Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, has advised Nigerian Afrobeat star, Davido, to disregard calls for his apology regarding the controversial music video he shared on his social media platforms.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Professor Wole Soyinka said that Davido does not owe Muslims an apology. The literary icon pointed out that in the past, former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El Rufai, had made offensive comments about Christians but was never asked to apologize.
He said, “There was nothing to apologize about, and that applied equally to El Rufai’s comments at the time. It should come as no surprise that I equally absolutely disagree with Shehu Sani if indeed, as reported, he has demanded an apology from Davido on behalf of the Moslem community.”
“It wasn’t Davido’s music that lynched Deborah Yakubu, a second-year Christian college student who was killed by a mob of Muslim students in Sokoto last year over alleged blasphemy,” he added.
