In an official statement released on August 4, 2023, U.S. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken announced that certain foreign assistance programs benefiting the government of Niger will be paused.
The interim measure, however, does not affect all U.S. foreign assistance programs in the country, with life-saving humanitarian and food assistance remaining unaffected.
The U.S. government will continue its activities in Niger where feasible, including diplomatic and security operations, to ensure the safety of U.S. personnel.
Secretary Blinken emphasised that the provision of U.S. assistance to Niger’s government depends on democratic governance and respect for constitutional order. This stance aligns with actions taken by ECOWAS and the African Union. As the situation on the ground continues to evolve, the U.S. government will review its foreign assistance and cooperation in line with policy objectives and legal restrictions.
The U.S. government reaffirms its commitment to supporting the people of Niger in safeguarding their hard-earned democracy and calls for the immediate restoration of Niger’s democratically-elected government.
