United States Urges Fair And Peaceful Elections In Zimbabwe Amid Concerns

The U.S. emphasises that the citizens of Zimbabwe deserve the opportunity to exercise their right to choose their country's future without intimidation or repression, consistent with the nation's constitution.

As Zimbabweans prepare for the upcoming polls scheduled for August 23, the United States has issued a call for all involved parties to uphold the principles of free, fair, and peaceful elections.

The U.S. emphasises that the citizens of Zimbabwe deserve the opportunity to exercise their right to choose their country’s future without intimidation or repression, consistent with the nation’s constitution.

It  asserts that respecting citizens’ voting rights and facilitating democratic processes is integral to achieving lasting peace and prosperity.

Expressing apprehension regarding recent developments leading up to the elections, which include instances of political violence and measures that restrict human rights and freedoms guaranteed by Zimbabwe’s constitution, the United States has raised concerns.

The U.S. condemns the refusal to grant credentials to international journalists and domestic civil society members for election coverage within the country, as well as delays in accrediting election observers.

While firmly calling upon the government of Zimbabwe and all political leaders to ensure that the electoral process remains devoid of violence and coercion and  clarifying that it does not endorse any particular party or candidate, the U.S. underscores its unwavering commitment to supporting the democratic mechanisms and aspirations of Zimbabwe. This encompasses the determination to counter corruption and reinforce the rule of law.

The United States has been a steadfast supporter of Zimbabwe’s populace since its independence in 1980. It continues to extend its solidarity as the country prepares to cast its votes on Wednesday.
