In a recent update from the Federal Government, significant changes have been introduced to the process for Nigerians looking to update their date of birth on the National Identification Number (NIN) database.
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has unveiled new guidelines, making it mandatory for applicants to provide an electronic civil registration and vital statistics system (e-CRVS) certificate from the National Population Commission (NPC).
The revised guidelines, communicated through the official channels of the NIMC, outline additional prerequisites for modifying the date of birth.
Applicants are now obligated to submit copies of other valid documents for identification, accompanied by an application letter for the modification addressed to the Commission’s Director General.
It is noteworthy that the previous procedure, which involved presenting an affidavit and paying a fee of N15,000, has been replaced by these more rigorous requirements.
The Commission underscores that modifications to the date of birth can only be carried out once in a lifetime and exclusively at NIMC enrollment centers. Furthermore, it explicitly warns against licensed agents facilitating changes in dates of birth and other personal details.
This development closely follows the recent announcement by Nigerian telecommunications operators, setting February 28, 2024, as the deadline for the disconnection of Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) not linked to the National Identity Number (NIN).
