SuperSport Excluded From AFCON 2023 Broadcast As Multichoice Fails To Secure Rights

Multichoice, the parent company of DStv, announced on Wednesday that its popular SuperSport channels would not be broadcasting the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 tournament. The decision comes after the satellite giant failed to secure the broadcasting rights for the highly anticipated football competition.

In an official statement, Multichoice revealed, “SuperSport Channel will not broadcast the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 scheduled for January 13th – February 11th, 2024, because the channel has not secured the rights to broadcast the tournament.” However, the company assured football enthusiasts that AFCON 2023 games would still be accessible through their partner broadcast stations on Free to Air (FTA) channels.

Multichoice Africa expressed its ongoing commitment to providing unparalleled access to entertainment and football games across the continent through its DStv and GOtv platforms. Despite the setback regarding AFCON, the statement highlighted the continued availability of prestigious football competitions such as the Premier League, LaLiga, Serie A, Zambian Super League, and more.

The 34th edition of AFCON is set to kick off on January 13th in Ivory Coast, featuring three-time winners Nigeria in Group A alongside hosts Ivory Coast, Guinea-Bissau, and Equatorial Guinea. The Eagles, eager to secure their fourth continental title, will commence their journey with a match against Equatorial Guinea on January 14th, followed by clashes with Ivory Coast on January 18th and Guinea Bissau on January 22nd. Football fans can still catch all the action on Free to Air channels as Multichoice strives to maintain its commitment to providing diverse sports content to its audience.
