In a decisive move to combat environmental degradation and enhance security, the Bauchi state government has implemented a ban on the issuance of consent letters to potential investors in the mining sector by individuals, groups, and monarchs without official approval.
The decision, communicated by Saleh Umar, the information officer in the ministry of natural resources, emphasizes the necessity of obtaining clearance from the ministry to issue consent letters.
The government, led by Commissioner Maiwada Bello, is committed to fostering an environment conducive to the growth of the mining sector, boosting investor confidence in solid minerals.
Commissioner Bello highlighted the ban’s purpose, stating that it intends to address environmental concerns and security challenges associated with mining activities in the state.
The official statement released on Saturday firmly declares, “I, therefore, call on our traditional rulers and all stakeholders in the mining sector, especially mining investors, to take note.”
This regulatory measure follows the revelation by Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, in December, who pointed fingers at “powerful Nigerians” behind illegal mining, accusing them of sponsoring banditry and contributing to the country’s security challenges.
The Bauchi state government’s proactive stance emphasizes the broader efforts to promote responsible mining practices and safeguard the region’s environmental and security interests.
