In the early hours of Thursday, a gun battle ensued between the Ogun State Police Command and armed robbers at the Abbey Hostel in Ode Remo, where students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic Saapade reside.
The police successfully foiled the robbery attempt, shooting one suspect dead in the process.
Around 1:30 a.m., four armed robbers reportedly stormed the hostel, dispossessing students of their mobile phones and electronic gadgets.
A resident alerted the police during the ongoing robbery, prompting an anti-crime patrol team to respond. As the police approached, the suspects engaged them in a shootout.
During the exchange of gunfire, one of the armed robbers was shot dead, while the remaining three fled with varying degrees of injuries.
Police recovered a bag containing five iPhones, one Techno phone, a wristwatch, an iPod, and a power bank from the scene.
Omolola Odutola, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident, stating that efforts are underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
Notably, the Gateway ICT Polytechnic Saapade and its student hostels have experienced a surge in robbery incidents in recent months, with a fatal incident in December 2023 and sporadic shootings in November 2023.
