Nigeria Customs Sets Sights On Revenue Boost In 2024 Budget Announcement

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, unveiled the organization’s  2024 budget before the Nigeria Senate Committee on Customs at the National Assembly.

The CG, during his presentation of the 706.43 billion naira budget, highlighted the imperative of consolidating ongoing projects, prioritizing staff welfare, and integrating innovative technologies into customs processes to streamline operations.

One of the focal points of the presentation was the pledge to exceed the revenue target set for 2024, which stands at 5.079 trillion naira, representing a 27.75 percent increase over the previous year. CG Adeniyi underscored various strategies aimed at achieving this target, including the implementation of the National Single Window advocated by the Federal Ministry of Finance.

Moreover, the Customs chief emphasized the significance of supporting local production and ensuring food security. He announced plans to grant waivers to vehicle owners for timely payment of duties to avoid sanctions and regularize vehicle importations through duty payments.

In addressing staff welfare concerns, CG Adeniyi assured officers of incentives such as awards, promotions, and increased allowances to boost morale and enhance performance. The recruitment of 1,600 personnel in 2024 was also announced, albeit with a lower figure due to limited vacancies available primarily for junior staff roles.

Reflecting on the challenges encountered in meeting revenue targets in 2023, CG Bashir attributed the 12.62 percent shortfall to factors including concessions in the Common External Tariff, import duty exemptions, cash constraints, and the impact of general elections. However, he expressed optimism for a more positive outcome in the upcoming fiscal year.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Customs, Senator Isa Jibrin commended CG Adeniyi for the progress made under his leadership and pledged the committee’s support in terms of remuneration and infrastructure to facilitate the achievement of the 2024 revenue target.
