Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has set a goal for Oyo State to become the pioneer in achieving electricity sufficiency in Nigeria.

Speaking at the 20th Anniversary of the British American Tobacco (BAT) Ibadan Plant, Governor Makinde emphasized his administration’s commitment to energy sufficiency, highlighting a strategic partnership with BAT to leverage renewable energy sources.

The governor lauded BAT’s contributions to the state’s development over the years and expressed the state’s readiness to collaborate further to enhance electricity supply. In line with this vision, Oyo State is set to commission a 1.4-megawatt solar plant, marking a significant step towards achieving energy sufficiency.

Governor Makinde also revealed plans to inaugurate an 11-megawatt power plant, combining gas-driven and solar-powered capabilities, in the coming weeks.

Additionally, he announced the impending establishment of the Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission through legislative measures, aimed at fostering regulatory frameworks conducive to energy sector growth within the state.

Furthermore, Governor Makinde underscored the importance of constitutional amendments to empower states for optimal performance, advocating for reduced dependence on federal resources.

The governor’s proactive stance reflects Oyo State’s determination to assert its autonomy and drive sustainable development initiatives, including energy sufficiency.

In his remarks, Chief Kola Karim, Chairman of BAT Nigeria, celebrated the company’s longstanding presence in Nigeria, highlighting its role in driving economic growth and prosperity.

Mr. Yarub Al-Bahrani, Managing Director of BAT Nigeria, echoed this sentiment, reaffirming the company’s commitment to sustaining its legacy of success and contributing to Oyo State’s economic advancement.
