In a recent announcement, the Lagos State Government has declared its intention to crack down on homeowners who are charging exorbitant fees for renting out their apartments.
Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, issued a stern warning, stating that the government would not hesitate to take action against allottees found guilty of engaging in such sharp practices.
Akinderu-Fatai emphasized that the purpose of allowing allottees to spread payment over ten years with a five percent down payment was to alleviate the burden on Lagosians. However, some individuals have exploited this generosity by renting out their apartments solely for profit, disregarding the government’s intent to provide affordable housing.
The Commissioner urged facility managers and association members within estates to report any homeowners engaging in such practices to the ministry. Those found culpable risk losing their apartment allocations, with refunds issued for payments made.
Furthermore, the state government reiterated its commitment to addressing the housing needs of first-time buyers through initiatives such as outright purchase and rent-to-own platforms.
Addressing concerns beyond rent charges, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Housing, Engineer Abdulhafis Toriola, highlighted issues regarding the harbouring of individuals with questionable character in some estates. Toriola assured that the ministry would promptly investigate and take the necessary steps to ensure the safety and well-being of residents.
He also stressed the importance of allottees taking responsibility for joint facilities and adhering to estate regulations to maintain a conducive living environment for all residents.
