Nigeria’s Oil And Gas Industry Sees Gradual Reversal Of Investment Decline, Says Komolafe

Mr. Gbenga Komolafe, Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), has shed light on Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, indicating a gradual reversal in investment decline.

Speaking at The Sun Public Service Award 2023 ceremony, Komolafe emphasized the impact of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), citing billions of dollars in capital expenditure and a notable increase in active rigs.

According to Komolafe, the implementation of pioneering regulations, including the groundbreaking crude oil measurement regulation, signifies a turning point in Nigeria’s over 70 years of oil and gas production.

He underscored the potential of these regulations to save the country billions of dollars, heralding a new era of certainty and predictability in the sector.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s economic outlook, the African Development Bank (AfDB) projected a slow but steady recovery, buoyed by rising oil prices and increased production.

Despite challenges such as inflation and currency devaluation, the bank anticipates gradual progress, particularly with macroeconomic policy reforms initiated in recent years.

While Nigeria’s growth forecast for 2024 stands at 2.9%, AfDB forecasts a rebound in 2025, driven by ongoing policy adjustments aimed at addressing economic imbalances.

However, the report also underscores the importance of regional growth, with Africa expected to maintain its status as the world’s fastest-growing region.

AfDB’s President, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, emphasized the need for domestic resource mobilization and prudent debt management to mitigate risks associated with external borrowing.

He stressed the importance of maximizing revenue from natural resources through enhanced governance and transparency measures.

Quoting Mr. Komolafe, “The progress in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector underscores our commitment to fostering a conducive environment for investment and innovation. We remain dedicated to leveraging regulatory frameworks to maximize the sector’s potential and contribute to national development.”
