In response to mounting concerns over extortion and sexual exploitation, the Abia State government has taken a decisive step by banning all forms of beauty contests within its jurisdiction.
This announcement was made by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Entertainment and Tourism, Okey Justice Martins, during a press briefing held in Umuahia.
Martins emphasized that the ban was prompted by reports stating the exploitation of participants in beauty pageants. He pointed out that certain individuals had been exploiting Abia girls under the guise of beauty contests, making false promises, and even facilitating their involvement in illicit activities.
According to Martins, the ban is a proactive measure aimed at safeguarding the well-being and dignity of young women in the state. He stressed the importance of holding organizers accountable for their actions and ensuring that they adhere to strict guidelines set forth by the government.
As part of the new regulations, organizers seeking to host beauty contests must undergo certification and screening processes conducted by the Abia State government. This rigorous assessment is designed to verify the legitimacy of their operations and ensure compliance with established standards.
“Some individuals are taking advantage of Abia girls in the name of pageantry, make unfulfilled promises as well as pimp them out to wealthy men in the state, thereby jeopardizing their careers while seeking to wear a crown,” Martins asserted.
