In response to the escalating challenges of rising inflation and food price spikes in Nigeria, the Government of Ukraine has extended a helping hand by donating 25,000 metric tonnes of wheat as emergency food assistance. This significant contribution aims to support approximately 1.3 million vulnerable individuals affected by crises in the northeast region of Nigeria.
According to a statement released by Atinuke Akande-Alegbe, the Senior Communications and Public Diplomacy Officer at the British High Commission’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, the donation was facilitated through the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). This initiative is part of Ukraine’s humanitarian “Grain from Ukraine” program, spearheaded by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The collaborative effort involved various nations, including the UK, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Luxembourg, Norway, the Republic of Korea, and Sweden. Together, they facilitated the transportation of the wheat from Ukraine to Nigeria.
Akande-Alegbe emphasised the urgency of the donation, citing the significant impact of soaring food prices on vulnerable families across Nigeria. She highlighted the essential role of international assistance in addressing food insecurity amidst conflict and regional instability.
Cynthia Rowe, the Development Director at the British High Commission, underscored the devastating effects of conflicts and violence in northeast Nigeria, which have displaced millions of people and disrupted agricultural activities. She noted the recent surge in staple food prices, posing challenges for vulnerable families who rely on harvests and markets for their sustenance.
This generous contribution from Ukraine and the collaborative efforts of various nations reflect the global commitment to supporting vulnerable populations and addressing food insecurity in Nigeria. The aid is expected to provide much-needed relief to those most affected by the ongoing crises in the region.
