The Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced enhancements to scholarships and bursaries for students, coupled with the appointment of former student leaders to key positions.

In a recent interactive session between Governor Sanwo-Olu and student union leaders and stakeholders in Lagos State, it was revealed that scholarships for tertiary education students of Lagos State origin would see a substantial increase.

Beginning from 2024, indigene students will receive N225,000 for scholarships and N60,000 for bursaries, up from the previous amounts of N200,000 and N50,000, respectively. Additionally, scholarships will now be extended to less privileged and physically challenged students in public tertiary institutions, irrespective of their state of origin.

As part of the commitment to engage students constructively, Governor Sanwo-Olu also announced the appointment of four former student union leaders as Senior Special Assistants (SSAs). Eniola Opeyemi, Kayode Samuel, Giwa Moore, and Adeola Adewunmi have been appointed to contribute their expertise and insights to the government’s decision-making processes.

The interactive session, held at the Adeyemi Bero Hall in Alausa, witnessed the participation of various stakeholders, including members of the State cabinet, representatives from public tertiary institutions, and delegates from 13 public tertiary institutions across Lagos State.

Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of the session, stating that it provides an avenue for students and stakeholders to express their opinions and suggestions on overcoming challenges facing the state. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to youth development, social inclusion, and gender equality, aligning with the THEMES+ agenda.

Lagos State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering support for quality tertiary education and youth development. He stated the government’s achievements in maintaining stability in academic calendars and ensuring the welfare of students and staff across state-owned institutions.

Guest Speaker, Prof. Olanrewaju Fagbohun, lauded Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration for its constructive engagement and consultation with stakeholders. He stated the need for regular consultations and prioritization of student welfare in government policies, suggesting investments in infrastructure and support services like mental health counseling.
