The Lagos State Government has announced it’s partnership with Niger State in other to enhance food production. The agreement, named the “Produce for Lagos Initiative,” aims to leverage the agricultural strengths of both states to ensure a constant supply of agricultural commodities for consumers.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State and his counterpart, Governor Mallam Umar Mohammed Bago of Niger State, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to formalize the cooperation. This initiative aligns with the Emergency Food Security Initiative declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, focusing on cultivating thousands of hectares of land to sustain food production and supply chains.
The partnership capitalizes on the comparative advantages of each state. While Lagos boasts a well-organized food market and high consumer demand, Niger State possesses extensive arable land suitable for agriculture and food production.
Governor Sanwo-Olu stated the significance of the partnership as one that will facilitate the supply of fresh farm produce from Niger State to Lagos Food Logistics hubs for storage and distribution, and would be of mutual benefit to the citizens of both states.
Governor Bago described the partnership as a “landmark” agreement, stating the potential for economic growth and enhanced food security. Under the MoU, Niger State will produce agricultural commodities and staple food items for Lagos, while Lagos will provide organized markets and supply chains to meet consumer demands.
Ms. Abisola Olusanya, Lagos Commissioner for Agriculture, stated the positive impact of the partnership on price stability and farmer profitability. She announced plans to commission the first phase of the Food Security Systems and Central Logistics Park in Epe to warehouse supplies from Niger State.
