The Nigerian Senate has taken decisive action against Senator Abdul Ningi from Bauchi Central Senatorial District, suspending him for three months amidst allegations of budget padding.
The suspension, orchestrated under the leadership of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, follows a tumultuous session in the red chamber.
Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, a member of the Appropriation Committee, initially proposed a motion for Ningi’s suspension for 12 months, citing accusations of criminal misinformation and breach of peace within the National Assembly and beyond.
However, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong from Cross River South Senatorial District, and Senator Abdulfatai Buhari from Oyo North, advocated for amendments, ultimately leading to a reduction in the suspension period to three months.
During the session, Akpabio described Ningi’s offenses as “grievous,” prompting a voice vote where the majority of lawmakers supported the three-month suspension.
Ningi’s troubles stem from his claims regarding the 2024 budget, alleging disparities between two versions and skewness against the Northern region. His assertions were met with criticism from fellow senators and the Presidency, who deemed them “far-fetched and unbecoming.”
In response, Ningi clarified his statements, insisting that only N25 trillion of the budget was allocated to projects, while N3.7 trillion lacked project allocations.
