In a bid to alleviate the economic burden on Lagos residents, Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has issued a directive for the commencement of ‘Ounje Eko’ food markets across the state starting from Sunday, March 17, 2024.
These markets are aimed at providing discounted food items to citizens across the five divisions of Lagos.
According to a statement released by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, the discounted items will include staples such as rice, beans, gari, bread, eggs, tomatoes, pepper, among others, all offered at a 25% discount.
To ensure transparency and prevent any form of exploitation, a voucher system will be implemented as the pilot scheme is launched. Independent payment solution providers and food vendors have been meticulously chosen to oversee the process, with a commitment to providing real-time data for effective monitoring.
The statement further outlines the prices of key food items, with a 5kg bag of rice priced at N5,325 and a 1kg bag at N1,065. Similarly, a 5kg bag of beans will be sold at N6,225, while a 1kg bag will cost N1,245. Prices of other essential food items will also be disseminated through various media channels.
The ‘Ounje Eko’ markets will be operational at 27 locations in Ikeja, six in Lagos Island, nine in Ikorodu, five in Epe, and 10 in Badagry divisions, ensuring widespread accessibility for Lagosians in need.
