Robinho: The Former Manchester City, AC Milan and Real Madrid Player convicted of Rape in Italy.
The decision of the Brazilian Justice, which on Wednesday ordered former footballer Robson de Souza ‘Robinho’ to serve a nine-year sentence in a Brazilian prison for a rape conviction in Italy, was applauded.
“The verdict in the Robinho case demonstrates that it is possible to respect diplomatic agreements without compromising justice,” stated the Minister of Women’s Affairs in a press release.
Gonçalves emphasized that the state must acknowledge the sexual violence against a woman and ensure that this crime does not go unpunished with the support of Brazilian institutions.
In this regard, the minister urged that the law prevail to ensure the sentence is carried out, as only then will society understand that women “must be respected.”
Robinho, 40, was found guilty of participating in the gang rape of a young Albanian woman in a Milan nightclub in 2013 during his time with AC Milan.
The former forward, who started his professional career at Santos under Pelé and also played for Real Madrid and Manchester City, never served his sentence as he returned to Brazil, a country that prohibits the extradition of its citizens.
Italian authorities requested that Brazilian Justice validate the conviction and subsequently order the imprisonment of the former footballer to serve his sentence in his home country.
The Brazilian court validated the 2017 conviction from Italy and ordered immediate imprisonment in a closed regime.
