Flamengo and Brazilian striker Gabriel Barbosa, commonly known as ‘Gabigol’, has been handed a two-year suspension for alleged attempted anti-doping fraud.
The 27-year-old footballer, who has represented Brazil 18 times, faces this disciplinary action following accusations of obstructing an anti-doping test conducted before a scheduled match.
Gabriel Barbosa vehemently denies the allegations, emphasizing his commitment to fair play and adherence to anti-doping regulations throughout his career. In a statement, he expressed his disappointment with the verdict while maintaining his innocence and affirming his cooperation with sporting authorities to clear his name.
The Brazilian Doping Control Authority confirmed the ruling by the Anti-Doping Sports Court of Justice, citing a violation of anti-doping protocols related to attempted fraud. Barbosa’s two-year ban commences from the date of the violation, impacting his availability for the upcoming Brazilian Serie A season, which starts on 14 April.
Flamengo, Barbosa’s club, expressed surprise at the decision and pledged support for his appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). They refute any allegations of fraud or misconduct on his part and aim to assist in overturning the suspension.
Gabriel Barbosa’s career trajectory includes a successful stint with Flamengo, culminating in a permanent transfer from Inter Milan in 2020. He notably contributed to Flamengo’s triumph in the 2022 Copa Libertadores final, scoring the decisive goal in a historic victory.
While facing a temporary setback with the suspension, Barbosa remains optimistic about his innocence prevailing through the appeals process, enabling him to return to competitive football and continue his contributions on the pitch.
