The news has been confirmed that Ethan Nwaneri, the Nigerian-born player and the Premier League’s youngest-ever participant, has put pen to paper, finalizing his first professional contract with Arsenal.

Nwaneri made history at just 15 years and 181 days old when he made his Premier League debut against Brentford in September 2022, breaking the record previously held by Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott.

Despite not featuring in the first team after that match, Nwaneri continued to impress at the youth level and made his second senior appearance in February’s 6-0 victory against West Ham United.

Having attracted interest from other top-flight clubs, Arsenal successfully negotiated scholarship terms with Nwaneri, which are set to expire in 2025. With his recent 17th birthday making him eligible to sign a professional contract, Nwaneri has now converted his scholarship deal into a professional agreement upon his return from international duty with England’s Under-17s.

According to reports from Arsenal FC, Nwaneri has committed his future to the Gunners, despite interest from Manchester City and Chelsea. Discussions have also begun regarding a potential new and improved contract when Nwaneri turns 18 in March 2024.

Nwaneri’s impressive performances in youth competitions, including a five-goal haul in a single game during the FA Youth Cup and contributing to nine goals in Premier League 2 matches, have solidified his status as a promising talent.

The 17-year-old midfielder has made 14 appearances in all competitions across the academy this season, scoring 14 goals in the process.

Arsenal is keen on integrating him into the first-team setup, showcasing their commitment to nurturing young talent within the club.

Nwaneri on signing his first pro deal:

“It’s a proud moment to finally be here, so I’m happy & ready to keep working. It was the dream to get to this stage. I’ve always thought about when this day would come and I’ve been looking forward to it, so I’m happy it’s finally here.”

Academy Manager Per Mertesacker said: “We are extremely proud of Ethan and his journey, from pre-academy to Hale End, then a seamless transition to Sobha Realty Training Centre and then making his first team debut. Ethan’s journey now continues, and we will all be there alongside him to support his development.

“Ethan has a strong ability to master the ball, dominate possession and is really effective in the final third, which fits into our playing style at Arsenal Football Club. He is someone that will thrive on and off the pitch as a Strong Young Gunner and we look forward to working with him during his ongoing development in the years to come.”

Everyone at the club would like to congratulate Ethan on signing his first professional contract and we look forward to seeing his continued development.
