Mass Looting Spree In Kebbi State Amidst Rising Cost of Living

In a brazen display of lawlessness, residents of Kebbi State unleashed chaos in Birnin Kebbi, the state capital, by attacking a government warehouse in the Bayan Kara area.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday night, saw hoodlums overpowering security operatives stationed at the warehouse, making off with essential food items.

Not stopping at government facilities, the unruly mob also ransacked private warehouses and shops in the vicinity, further exacerbating the already dire situation.

Additionally, they seized an abandoned truck loaded with assorted grains, intended for distribution within the area.

This alarming trend of warehouse attacks is not confined to Kebbi State alone. Similar incidents have been reported in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and Suleja, Niger State, painting a picture of widespread lawlessness and desperation.

The root cause of this surge in criminal activity can be traced back to the ongoing cost of living crisis, which many attribute to the recent removal of petrol subsidies and the subsequent fluctuation of the naira.

Speaking to  DailyTrust reporters, Muhammadu Gwadangwaji, Chairman of the food vendors association at Bayan Kara Market, lamented the destruction caused by the marauding youths. He recounted how shops and warehouses were set ablaze while security forces attempted to contain the situation with gunfire and tear gas, to no avail.

Reacting to the mayhem, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Nasir Idris, Ahmed Idris, expressed deep regret over the incident, labelling it “unfortunate.” He disclosed that the looted food items were part of a government initiative aimed at alleviating the hardships faced by the people of the state.

According to Idris, the state government had invested over N5 billion in procuring and distributing assorted grains via more than 200 trucks. He decried the fact that the looters targeted resources meant for the welfare of the state’s populace, vowing that stringent measures would be implemented to prevent a recurrence.

Despite repeated attempts to solicit a response from the state Police Public Relations Officer, Nafiu Abubakar, no comment was forthcoming at the time of reporting.

As Kebbi State grapples with the aftermath of this unprecedented act of lawlessness, questions linger regarding the efficacy of security measures and the broader socioeconomic challenges facing the nation.
